If you want to understand the origins of the "nerd-herd," look no further than Donna Standridge. Known to the community as Midnight Chaos, Donna has been a fixture in the convention scene for 43 years. She is a self-described "feral GenXer" who treats every cosplay project like a wrestling match with foam, contact cement, and existential dread.
Her journey began in the mid-1980s with a mission to get an album signed by Frank Kelly Freas. Instead, she found a "costume contest" and a life-long obsession. After a frantic eight-hour "archaeological dig" through her sister's 70s-era prom dresses, a budget Barbarella was born—and Donna hasn't stopped building since.
Donna has seen the hobby transform from closet-cobbled outfits to the semi-professional, high-stakes world of modern competition. While she welcomes the new fairness brought by judging rubrics, she remains a "forever student" of the craft.
"I have come to terms with the fact that I will never be an expert in everything," Donna says. "We will all always have something to learn, and that is another glorious thing."
Specializing in foamsmithing, Donna is drawn to the high-detail complexity of World of Warcraft and the dramatic aesthetics of characters like Maleficent. But what truly sets her apart in her age bracket is her boldness. Donna isn't interested in "age-appropriate" limitations; she embraces body-accentuating, intricate builds that challenge both her skills and the observer's expectations.
Beyond the builds, Donna is a fierce advocate for inclusion. As a former Cosplay Coordinator and judge, she has seen firsthand the power of belonging. To Donna, "Cosplay is for Everyone" isn't a slogan; it's a way of life.
"Passion, creativity, and that beautiful sense of belonging don’t come with an expiration date," she asserts. "Period."
Currently, she is tackling the grueling complexity of Malenia, Blade of Miquella from Elden Ring—a project she admits makes her question her life choices, yet fuels her "chaos gremlin" perfectly.
How long will the chaos continue? According to Donna, as long as her body allows. She jokes about being spotted at a convention at age 80, likely wearing something "wildly inappropriate."
"If that happens," she laughs, "just smile politely and pretend you didn’t see it."
Until then, she’ll be in the workshop, perfecting her Zatanna, fixing her Lady Loki, and reminding us all that if you have a story to tell or a character to inhabit, you should just do it. No permission required.
Donna knows that staying sharp means watching the best in the business. Here are three creators she recommends you check out:
