The cosplay community is famous for pushing boundaries, but the Rocky Mountain region recently witnessed a historic first: an actual living, breathing bird inducted into an official cosplay organization.
Meet Dennis the Emu—a living ratite, community ambassador, and certified superhero—alongside his dedicated Emu Wrangler, Billie-Sue Mitchell.
Hailing from Colorado, this dynamic duo has taken community outreach by storm. Dennis made history by becoming the first emu ever inducted into the Mile High Multiverse cosplayer group. Fresh off a smash success appearance at FAN EXPO Denver, Dennis and Billie-Sue dedicate their time to spreading pure happiness across local schools, charity functions, and community parades.
For this issue’s Good COZ segment, COZ Magazine caught up with Billie-Sue to talk about Dennis's origin story, educational outreach, and the universal magic of an emu hug.
While Dennis occasionally dresses up as a prehistoric dinosaur or a dragon equipped with small custom wings, his absolute most popular persona is simply being himself: a big, soft, fluffy emu.
Billie-Sue first realized Dennis possessed heroic qualities during their routine neighborhood walks. As passersby stopped in their tracks and erupted into genuine smiles, the mission became clear.
"Dennis is an actual living emu, and I'm his wrangler," Billie-Sue explains. "He spreads joy, happiness, and hugs wherever he goes. He will seek out frowns and turn them upside down with just one look. When Dennis goes for walks and people start to smile—that's when I knew he was a superhero."
Their impact spans beyond casual street walkabouts. For Dennis's 5th birthday, hundreds of fans gathered in Colorado for a giant celebration to wish him well—a testament to the deep, uplifting bond he has formed with the regional fan community.
Beyond convention halls, Dennis and Billie-Sue perform crucial educational work across local school districts. During school visits, Billie-Sue teaches young students about ratites (flightless birds), wildlife conservation, and animal care, using Dennis's gentle, curious nature as a hands-on learning tool.
When walking alongside fellow cosplayers in the Mile High Multiverse, Dennis acts as a beacon of warmth for children and adults facing difficult times.
"Dennis is not a diva—he will be ready to hop in the truck at a moment's notice if he senses unhappiness," Billie-Sue shares warmly. "Dennis loves people. No matter your background, where you come from, or what's going on in your life, one hug from an emu fills you with universal happiness."
"Look someone in the eyes today and gift them with your smile. It's the butterfly effect... you could just change the world."
For anyone considering putting their craft, time, or unique passion behind a charitable cause, Billie-Sue's advice is immediate and direct:
"Do it. Just do it."
Billie-Sue leaves COZ Magazine readers with a simple daily call to action: "Look someone in the eyes today and gift them with your smile. It's the butterfly effect—you could just change the world."
