Stepping onto a convention floor in a pair of high-energy, spike-laden, punk-rock Spider-Suits is guaranteed to turn heads. But doing it hand-in-hand as a couple takes the power-chord energy to a whole new level.

Meet Frankie and Melissa, the Kalamazoo, Michigan duo taking the Midwest convention circuit by storm as Spider-Punk and Ghost-Punk.

Though they only began their costuming journey a little over a year ago, this dynamic pair has rapidly carved out a signature niche within the local community. Active members of the Michigan Spider Society, Frankie and Melissa bring raw attitude, shared passion, and genuine warmth to every event they attend. For our September COZ Couple feature, we sat down with the pair to talk family setups, handling convention conflicts, and the proud feeling of watching your partner shine.

Every great dynamic duo has an origin story, and for Frankie and Melissa, it began with a classic family connection. After being introduced by a relative, the two hit it off immediately. When looking for new, creative hobbies to explore together, costuming stood out as the ultimate shared venture.

"We thought it would be a fun activity we could share together," they reflect.

Stepping into the Spider-Verse, they naturally gravitated toward the rebellious, electric aesthetic of Hobie Brown's Spider-Punk and a matching, custom Ghost-Punk build. The transition from fans to convention mainstays was almost instantaneous.

For Frankie and Melissa, the best part of costuming isn't winning trophies—it's watching the joy their hard work brings to fellow fans, and to each other.

"It makes me very proud when I see people get excited about my wife's cosplay because I know how hard she worked on it," Frankie shares.

Melissa echoes the sentiment, focusing on the shared journey: "I just enjoy spending the time together and sharing those memories."

Of course, wearing high-concept Spider-Suits with masks and spikes comes with real-world physical hurdles. When asked about the challenges they’ve encountered during their first year, the couple keeps it humorously honest.

"Limitations on the amount of time wearing our cosplay because it's hard to see through the masks, it gets hot, and the bathroom can be a real challenge," they laugh. 🫣 "Other than that, it's been surprisingly easy!"

"Find a compromise when one of you wants to go to all the comicons and the other not so much!"

Navigating a relationship while managing a joint cosplay hobby requires communication—especially when convention fever hits one partner harder than the other. When asked how conflict resolution looks in a cosplay relationship, Frankie and Melissa point straight to budgeting and scheduling.

"Agreeing on the amount of time and money spent going to comicons," they admit candidly. "Finding a compromise can be challenging when one of us wants to go to all the comicons and the other not so much!"

Their ultimate advice for couples considering stepping into the convention world together? Keep it simple and stress-free: "Have fun and cosplay something comfortable if possible!"
